Driving Through Colorado, Listening to the Radio, Thinking of My Father Again

Oh yes, the radio says, I notice
when I feel God tapping me on the heart.

My father’s story of a hitchhiker:
the young guy in a soldier’s uniform
he picked up—the drive laden with hours left,
and the kid nice enough, hoping to reach
his girlfriend, he said, just in the next town.
Well look, the radio says, God has wired
our hearts for people
.       That’s why I keep this,
the kid had said, tugging his pant leg to
reveal the long hunting knife in his boot.
My father had asked him if he ever
felt afraid, entering a stranger’s car.
I’m not a soldier either, said the kid.
